Favia coral is a popular, hardy large polyp stony (LPS) coral prized in reef aquariums for its dome shape, contrasting mouths, and vibrant colors.
Classification and Naming
Common Names: Moon coral, closed brain coral, pineapple coral, or star coral.
Taxonomy Note: Most species formerly called Favia in the hobby have been reclassified into genera like Dipsastraea, Favites, or Goniastrea, though "Favia" remains a common trade term for closed brain corals. True Favia species are mostly restricted to protected Caribbean varieties.
Tank Care Requirements
Lighting: Moderate (75–150 PAR). Too much light risks bleaching, while too little dulls their colors.
Water Flow: Low to medium, indirect flow to keep detritus out of their ridges without damaging fleshy tissue.
Placement: Typically placed on the bottom or lower-middle sections of the aquarium.
Water Parameters: Maintain stable alkalinity (7–9 dKH), calcium (425 ppm), and magnesium (1350 ppm). Keep nitrates around 5–10 ppm.
Feeding and Temperament
Diet: Photosynthetic via zooxanthellae, but benefits greatly from target feeding meaty foods (like mysis or brine shrimp) a few times a week.
Aggression: Considered aggressive; they extend long sweeper tentacles at night to sting neighboring corals, so leave adequate space around them.
