The pipe organ coral, or Tubipora musica, is a soft marine animal that grows a hard, bright red skeleton. It gets its name because its skeleton looks like the tubes of a musical organ.
Appearance
Skeleton: Made of calcium carbonate and colored a deep red.
Polyps: Small soft flower-like parts that stick out of the tubes.
Tentacles: Each polyp has eight feathery arms. These arms are usually green, grey, or blue.
Movement: They sway smoothly in the water current.
Tank Care Requirements
Care Level: Moderate for home aquariums.
Lighting: Moderate to high light, around 75 to 150 PAR.
Water Flow: Medium and steady flow to wash away debris.
Temperature: 72°F to 78°F (some sources say up to 82°F).
Water Chemistry: Keep calcium around 400–450 ppm and alkalinity at 8–11 dKH.
Feeding and Growth
Energy: They get most of their food from light using tiny algae inside their bodies, called zooxanthellae.
Extra Food: They enjoy fine liquid foods, marine snow, or tiny bits of frozen food.
Growth Rate: They grow slower than other soft corals like green star polyps because they must build their stony red tubes.
Temperament: They are peaceful and safe to keep near other corals.
